Find the thing that you need to work on the most in your life.

We all have our thing that we need to work on and manage in our lives.

My thing is anxiety.

Yours could be anger. It could be jealousy. Or insecurity. Or confidence. Or it could be a combination of multiple things.

Everyone has a thing – one problem that will probably never be solved, but something that can be recognized and managed throughout their life.

How I found my thing

I’ve always been an anxious person, but the funny thing is I didn’t realize how anxious I really was until I had a minor (in the grand scheme of things) problem at work and had a rough time dealing with it. I noticed that my brain was running wild with anxiety and I couldn’t stop from dwelling on worst case scenarios.

I realized at the time that my anxiety was out of control, but I couldn’t reign it in.

I told myself that once I got though this work problem, I was going to focus on managing my anxiety.

Eventually I did overcome that problem and I started to notice how much my anxiety flooded my brain in everyday life. I am constantly worrying, catastrophizing and checking the locks and outlets to make sure the house doesn’t burn down.

Anxiety affects my life in a negative way, and it’s my thing. The thing that I’m going to manage for the rest of my life

While anxiety is a challenge in my life, I by no means think that it’s a negative thing and I’m not saying that I’m the only one with problems – in fact I’m saying the opposite – everyone has something that they will have to be continuously confronting for their lives.

How to find your thing

The first step is knowing that you have a thing. Concentrate on your thoughts and mood and see if you can find it.

Pay close attention to stressful times or times when you’re in a bad mood. Those are common opportunities for your thing to rear its ugly head.

What to do about it

Once you’ve found your thing, you have to figure out how to manage it.

The point of this article isn’t to help you fix or manage your thing. That’s going to take (a literal) lifetime. I’m just trying to help you get started.

Read books, articles and listen to podcasts. Keep experimenting and trying new things to see what helps and what doesn’t. You’ll start to get a little better over time until one day you’ll notice that you’ve made a huge improvement.
